When
a student is accepted into Iona Prep, he is accepted for success!
For over ninety years an Iona education has culminated
in each graduate's acceptance into a college or university of
his choice. This success begins with the following academic programs
that are offered to an Incoming Freshman.
COLLEGE PREP/ACCELERATED PROGRAM
All Iona Prep students take four (4) years of Religion, English,
Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. In addition, Iona requires
a three-year sequence in a foreign language; a fourth year of
foreign language is available to students who desire it. Within a students
first three years, several of these courses culminate with
the New York Regents in June. In senior year, students in this
program can take advantage of Advanced Placement or college level
courses as electives. Accelerated Placement is available for ninth
grade students who have mastered high school courses in their
previous schools.
HONORS PROGRAM
Iona Prep offers a student the opportunity of placement in honors
classes based on the individual student's ability, test performance,
previous academic experience, and personal interests. Because
Iona "individually places" a student in a class that is suited
to his needs and abilities, it is possible for a student to be
in honors in some subjects and not in others. A student can advance
into honors classes, though not placed there initially!
STEP (SUPERIOR TALENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAM)
Students qualify for this high honors program by receiving their
school's recommendation to sit for our Academic Scholarship Test
that is given in the Fall. Their elementary school record must
be outstanding, and they must serve as a role model for other
students. They also must score at or above the 95th percentile
on the TACHS test, the ISEE test, or Iona Prep's private entrance test.
Students are notified of their admission into this program with their
January acceptance letters.
These students work at an accelerated pace, begin advance placement
courses in the sophomore year, take Latin and a second foreign
language, and follow a core curriculum of English, Religion and
Global Studies. Science, Math and second foreign language placements
are based on ability and previous experience in these subjects.
OUR SUCCESS IS BASED ON....
- Individual Placement
- Grade Level Planning
- After School Study Center
- Four Year Guidance Counselors
- Senior Year College Advisor
Iona Prep's STEP
STEP (Superior Talent Enrichment Program) is designed to add both
breadth and depth to the educational experience of the "top" students
in our challenging Honors Program. Students have the opportunity
to analyze problems, synthesize theories and actions, evaluate issues
facing our complex society, and develop writing, thinking and leadership
skills.
Students who qualify STEP enjoy multiple benefits:
- STEP is built around a "core" curriculum of English, Social
Studies and Religion.
- Students participate in workshops that involve research and
independent projects.
- Students study Latin in addition to a second Foreign Language.

Although Mathematics, Science and Modern Language courses are not
part of the STEP core curriculum, it should be noted that the students
in this program, because of their exceptional ability and previous
academic experience, are placed in accelerated courses in these
areas. Students in STEP have the opportunity of graduating from
Iona Prep with 15 - 18 credits toward college. REWARDS
Such a program will reward students who show individual initiative
and intellectual challenges. Students are expected to maintain honor
roll status for the entire four years. Upon successful completion
of this program, students will receive "Special Honors" notation
on their diploma/transcript. This type of student stands out from
the crowd and has the credentials to prove it, making him attractive
to the more competitive colleges. QUALIFICATIONS
A student is eligible for STEP if:
- he is recommended by his school to sit for our Academic Scholarship
Test.
- he scores at or above the 95th percentile on the TACHS test (emphasis on verbal).
- he has superior grades from his present school with an emphasis
on his 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
- he is exemplary in character development.
